Missing Newport man's body found

 

The body of a Newport man reported missing by his family was found late Monday night.

The family of Oscar E. “Pete” Guinn, Jr. reported him missing at 9:47 p.m. after he failed to come home from working on his farm east of Weldon, according to an email from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

At 10:18 p.m. the sheriff’s department received a call that Guinn had been located on County Road 144.

It appeared Guinn had “accidentally slipped while cleaning a drainage tile and drowned,” according to the report.

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - The top Republican in the Arkansas House is calling on the governor to begin the process to remove state Treasurer Martha Shoffner over federal charges she accepted cash from an investment broker.

House Majority Leader Bruce Westerman on Tuesday asked Gov. Mike Beebe to convene lawmakers to remove Shoffner, a day after she appeared in court on federal extortion charges. Beebe, a Democrat, and other top elected officials have asked Shoffner to step down.

Armbands are now on sale for the 32nd Annual Portfest Festival.

The festival gets underway Friday, June 7, with performances by the Bellamy Brothers and John Conley.  Gates open at 4 p.m. with the concert starting at 5:30 p.m.  Armbands are $15 in advance or $20 at the gates.

The fun continues at noon Saturday, June 8, with more live entertainment and family-friendly activities, like pony rides, a petting zoo and a fireworks extravaganza.

The 8K obstacle challenge, which features 30 obstacles, will benefit Relay for Life.

Arrested Arkansas treasurer says she won't resign

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Treasurer Martha Shoffner says she doesn't intend to resign after a criminal complaint accused her of accepting cash from a broker who managed state funds.

Shoffner appeared in federal court Monday after she was arrested over the weekend at her home in Newport. She told reporters after the hearing that she didn't intend to resign, despite calls from the Arkansas Republican Party and some Democratic officials to do so.
