Woman robbed outside local bank

Newport police are searching for a man they say robbed a woman while she waited outside a local bank to make a deposit.

The theft occurred around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Merchant and Planters Bank North Branch, located at 915 Highway 367 North.

The victim told police she was in line to make a deposit when she noticed a man walk toward her car carrying a firearm.

The man reportedly then broke out her car window and grabbed the woman’s purse which contained a deposit bag for a local business.

The suspect, described as an African-American man in his 20s, then ran west.  He was wearing a red hoody sweater and dark pants.

Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspected thief.
